““Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influence of the earth.” — Henry David Thoreau
As I rise and lie down with each passing day—seasons folding into one another, my spring feeling like a midsummer daydream—I return to these words. They remind me of life’s beauty: its fullness, its simplicity, its extravagance, all at once.
At times, I feel overwhelmed. There is chaos within and around us. And yet, there is also the calmest night, a quiet holiness, warmth, and kindness. The earth remains a constant reminder of the gift of life. It is born, it grows, it gives—and when its time comes, it returns to where it began.
What mirrors this significance for me is my family—the one I am building, the one still unfolding. With each passing day, the seasons of our own becoming reveal themselves. There is growth, change, tenderness, and awe. I am humbled by the glory of living things—the earth and all its inhabitants.
And so I resign myself to the influence of the earth. It knows its purpose and fulfils it with quiet certainty. In the growth and becoming of this family, I find my own.
This, too, is purpose.”
