Artist statement—

“I am coming to understand rhythm not as constant motion,

but as something shaped by what interrupts it.

Once, I thought I must not stop-

that to keep my rhythm, I had to remain in motion.

To move continuously, without break and without pause.

But the body has its own language; it insists.

Rest arrives anyway-not as full surrender, but in fragments.

In the narrow intervals between movements,

I blink asleep for a second here,

a second there.

I breathe out-the body softens.

Even still, my body softens in this state.

I learn the relentlessness of the body’s design-how intricate, fragile, powerful, and driven it is.

And then I move again.

Somehow, within the not-stopping, it arrives-this quiet, necessary rest.

Not outside the rhythm, but threaded through it.

These small intervals-these almost invisible pauses-are what hold everything together.

I paint this collection of works in what feels like a never-ending whirl of movement.

The quiet and necessary rest comes not only in those brief moments of blinking asleep, but also in the studio where I create.

This is the place where I gather and lay down my ideas and understandings.

It is the space where I have felt intimidated by the canvas hanging overhead, yet also excited by it-tied to it, changed by it.

Stillness exists here, but we are always moving toward something else too."
